Awqaf Ministry launches water recycling projects in mosques to promote sustainability

Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, through its Engineering Affairs Department, has launched two pilot projects to recycle ablution water at mosques in Al Wakrah and Lusail. This initiative supports national efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and conserve water resources. The Qanbar Al Ansari Mosque (No. 1209) in Al Wakrah was developed in collaboration with the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and Al Wakrah Municipality, while the Al Kaldari Mosque (No. 1368) in Lusail partnered with Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company.

The key goal of the project is to treat and reuse ablution water for irrigating surrounding green spaces and for use in flushing systems within mosque restrooms. This approach significantly reduces freshwater consumption, minimizes waste, and boosts the efficient use of available water resources. By recycling water on-site, the mosques serve as models of sustainable infrastructure and responsible water management.

The Ministry confirmed that this initiative is a step toward expanding water recycling systems to other mosques currently under construction across the country. It aligns with Qatar’s national drive to adopt eco-friendly solutions and supports the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, especially in environmental development and the conservation of vital resources for future generations.
