Kathakali returns to Doha after 38 years, captivates packed ICC auditorium

Doha, Qatar: In a magnificent celebration of India’s classical heritage, a Kathakali performance organised by the Fun Day Club in association with the Angamaly Kathakali Club and the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) drew an unprecedented audience turnout at the ICC auditorium. The event marked a historic cultural milestone, as Kathakali returned to Doha after a long gap of 38 years, making it a truly momentous occasion for art lovers and the Indian community in Qatar.


The performance witnessed overwhelming participation, with Kathakali enthusiasts attending not only from across Qatar but also from India and other countries, underscoring the global appeal of the iconic art form.

The evening was graced by several distinguished guests, including H.E. Vipul, Ambassador of India to Qatar; Mr Manikandan, President of ICC; Mr Noor Hassan K. Saleh; Ms Noof Fawzi T. A. Alkhamis; Mr Unnikrishnan C. M, Deputy Group CEO – MENA, QIC; Mr Veeresh Mannangi, ICC Advisory Council Member; Mr Subramanya Hebbagelu, Former Vice President, ICC; and Ms Manju Manoj, President of Fun Day Club, along with prominent community leaders.

In their addresses, the dignitaries highlighted the importance of preserving India’s classical traditions, promoting cultural exchange, and strengthening Qatar’s vibrant multicultural fabric. They lauded the organisers for successfully bringing an ancient and revered art form like Kathakali back to the Doha stage.

A distinguished troupe of Kathakali artists and musicians mesmerised the audience with their powerful storytelling, intricate expressions, and rhythmic brilliance. The performers included Preface by Appukuttan Swaralayam; Bheeman portrayed by Kalamandalam Sreekumar; Panchali by Sreekanth Avanav; Hanuman by Sadanam Bhasi; vocal music by Kalamandalam Babu Nampoothiri and Sreedevan Cherumittam; percussion by Kalamandalam Udayan Nampoothiri (Chenda) and Biju Attupuram (Maddalam); and chutti (costume and make-up) by Mithun Murali, Thrippunithura.

The organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, artists, volunteers, and the enthusiastic audience whose support and participation made the event a grand success and a memorable cultural celebration in Doha.
