Sleep
is essential for the health of both a pregnant woman and her developing baby.
During pregnancy, the body undergoes hormonal and physical changes that can
affect sleep patterns. Health experts generally recommend 7–9 hours of sleep each night, as proper
rest helps the body recover, maintain hormonal balance, and support healthy
fetal development.
Adequate
sleep during pregnancy can improve maternal health and reduce risks such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes,
and stress-related complications. Studies have also suggested that women
who sleep very little during late pregnancy may experience longer labor and a higher chance of cesarean
delivery.
However,
many expectant mothers face sleep difficulties, especially in the later stages
of pregnancy. Hormonal changes, frequent urination, back pain, heartburn, and
fetal movements can disturb sleep. Research indicates that around 80% of pregnant women experience some
level of sleep disturbance during pregnancy.
