Kerala nuns granted bail by NIA Court in alleged trafficking case

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh: A special NIA court on Saturday granted bail to two Kerala-based nuns, Sisters Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis, who were arrested on July 25 over allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. They were taken into custody along with Sukaman Mandavi at Durg railway station following a complaint lodged by Bajrang Dal activists.

The complaint accused them of trafficking and forcibly converting three women from Narayanpur. A sessions court in Durg had earlier directed the matter to the NIA court, citing lack of jurisdiction.

The incident has triggered widespread political and religious backlash in Kerala. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has announced protest gatherings across all 140 assembly constituencies on August 3 and 4. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) condemned the arrest, claiming the women had written consent from their parents and were physically assaulted during custody.
