Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will soon open a new consulate in Malaysia, aiming to further strengthen bilateral ties and improve services for the Indian diaspora. Addressing a community event in Kuala Lumpur, he reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to overseas Indians.
Highlighting
a key policy move, PM Modi said the government has extended Overseas
Citizenship of India (OCI) card eligibility to Malaysian citizens of Indian
origin up to the sixth generation, calling it a historic decision that has
brought immense happiness to the diaspora. He also announced the introduction
of Thiruvalluvar Scholarships to support Malaysian students pursuing higher
education in India.
During the
visit, the Prime Minister toured a PIO History and Heritage Exhibition
showcasing the contributions of the Indian community in Malaysia. The visit is
part of efforts to deepen the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic
Partnership, with focus on economic, cultural, digital, and people-to-people
cooperation.
