Washington: WhatsApp has introduced a new optional password feature aimed at adding an extra layer of protection to user accounts.
The update allows users to create a personal password that must be entered after the standard six-digit verification code when logging into the app. The additional step is designed to prevent unauthorised access, even if someone obtains the verification code.
According to the company, the password can be between six and 20 characters and may include letters and numbers. A built-in strength indicator will guide users in choosing a secure combination.
The feature is optional and can be enabled, modified or removed through the app’s settings. Once activated, it will be required whenever users sign in on a new device.
The rollout is expected to take place gradually, forming part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to enhance privacy and security for its global user base.
