Doha, Qatar: People across the Northern Hemisphere, including those in Qatar, are set to witness the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, which is expected to peak on Monday evening and continue until dawn on Tuesday, according to the Qatari Calendar House (QCH).
Bashir Marzouk, an astronomer at QCH, highlighted the exceptional nature of this meteor shower, with peak rates reaching up to 50 meteors per hour. The Eta Aquarids, active annually from April 19 to May 28, originates from the famous Halley's Comet. As Earth orbits the Sun each May, it passes through dust particles left behind by the comet, creating bright flashes in the night sky as the particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere.
Marzouk noted that observing this celestial event requires a location free from environmental and light pollution. Fortunately, Qatar’s residents can enjoy the display without needing telescopes or specialized equipment. The meteor shower will be visible to the naked eye, starting Monday evening and continuing until sunrise on Tuesday, by looking toward the southeastern horizon from midnight until dawn.
