Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has issued a public advisory outlining simple yet effective measures that residents can take to help control the growing population of invasive myna birds in Qatar. As part of the ongoing campaign, the Ministry is calling on the community to actively participate in curbing the spread of this aggressive bird species.
Citizens
and residents are encouraged to report sightings of large gatherings or nests
of myna birds, enabling specialist teams to act promptly. Additionally, the
Ministry stressed the importance of not providing food sources, urging people
to properly dispose of leftovers and keep garbage bins sealed to limit access
to food waste.
To
prevent nesting, the public is advised to seal holes in walls and roofs and
remove dry branches from trees that may serve as potential shelter for these
birds. The Ministry also warned against tampering with traps or cages placed in
public areas, emphasizing that such equipment should only be handled by trained
professionals.
Recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as one of the world’s most invasive bird species, the myna poses a threat to local biodiversity, agriculture, and even public health, with links to avian diseases. The Ministry encourages everyone to share awareness and join hands in protecting Qatar’s environment.
