Iran has denied launching a ballistic missile toward Turkish airspace after Turkiye claimed that a missile originating from Iran was intercepted by NATO air and missile defence systems over the eastern Mediterranean.
Turkiye’s Defence Ministry said the ballistic
munition was detected passing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace before heading
toward Turkish territory. According to the ministry, NATO defence assets
stationed in the eastern Mediterranean engaged the missile in time and
neutralized it. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were
reported following the incident.
In a statement, Ankara warned that it reserves the
right to respond to any hostile actions against the country and urged all
parties to avoid further escalation. Addressing the nation, President Recep
Tayyip Erdogan said Turkiye is taking all necessary precautions in coordination
with NATO allies to safeguard its borders and airspace and prevent similar
incidents in the future.
