US
President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of India, warning that he
will significantly raise tariffs on Indian goods within the next 24 hours.
Trump, who already imposed a 25% tariff, accused India of not being a fair
trading partner and claimed that New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil
is helping "fuel the war machine" in Ukraine.
Speaking
in an interview with CNBC, Trump reiterated that India does “a lot of business”
with the US but doesn’t reciprocate equally. He also took to his Truth Social
platform to accuse India of reselling Russian oil for profit and turning a
blind eye to the ongoing war in Ukraine, vowing a "substantial"
tariff hike in response.
India
hit back, calling the criticism unfair and pointing out that both the US and
the EU maintain trade ties with Moscow. New Delhi argued that it is being
singled out for actions others continue to engage in, despite the ongoing
conflict. Meanwhile, the Kremlin defended India, with spokesperson Dmitry
Peskov condemning Trump's remarks as illegal pressure on sovereign trade
decisions.
As global tensions rise, the fallout from these statements could affect US-India trade relations and geopolitical alignments, with both India and Russia rejecting what they call coercive diplomacy from Washington.
