Untreated allergies may lead to serious health complications, specialist warns

Doha: Failing to treat allergy symptoms at an early stage can result in more serious health problems, a medical specialist has cautioned.

Dr Sami Aqel, an allergy and immunology consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation, said many people ignore recurring symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion and itchy eyes, assuming they are minor issues. However, without proper care, these conditions can progress into chronic sinus infections, worsening asthma and, in severe cases, dangerous allergic reactions.

He noted that allergic rhinitis, dust mite sensitivity, food allergies and eczema are among the most common conditions seen in Qatar. Because allergy symptoms often resemble those of a common cold, patients sometimes delay seeking medical advice.

Dr Aqel explained that allergies usually cause persistent sneezing and clear nasal discharge without fever, while colds are often accompanied by body aches, fatigue and elevated temperature.

He advised simple preventive measures at home, including regular cleaning, washing bedding in hot water, reducing indoor humidity and using air filtration systems where possible. For persistent cases, medical treatment such as antihistamines or nasal sprays may be required.

The specialist stressed that food allergies must be taken seriously, as severe reactions can escalate rapidly and require emergency care.

With timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, he added, most allergy sufferers can manage their symptoms effectively and avoid long-term
