Uttar Pradesh: A local cricket match in Shuklaganj
turned tragic after a senior umpire died following a sudden bee attack at the
ground.
The incident occurred during a league match at
Sapru Stadium when a swarm of bees descended on the field during a short break
in play. Players and officials rushed for cover as the insects spread across
the area.
The umpire, identified as Manik Gupta, aged around
65, was stung multiple times in the attack. Witnesses said he was unable to
move away quickly as the bees swarmed the ground. He was immediately taken to a
nearby hospital and later referred to a specialised medical facility in Kanpur,
where doctors declared him dead.
Several players and match officials also suffered
minor injuries from bee stings.
Gupta was a long-serving member of the Kanpur
Cricket Association and had officiated in numerous local tournaments over the
years. Members of the cricket community expressed shock over the incident and
extended condolences to his family.
