New Delhi: Air travel with Air India and Air India
Express will become slightly more expensive from Thursday as both airlines plan
to introduce a new fuel surcharge on tickets. The move comes as aviation fuel
prices continue to rise, increasing operating costs for airlines.
The additional charge will apply to both domestic
and international flights operated by the two carriers. For domestic routes and
nearby regional destinations, passengers will have to pay an extra fee added to
the ticket price from the date the new rule comes into effect.
Airline officials said the surcharge is being
introduced mainly because aviation turbine fuel has become more expensive in
recent weeks. Fuel costs make up a large share of airline expenses, and the
latest increase has pushed carriers to revise ticket pricing.
The revised charges will vary depending on the
destination and route. Flights to nearby international locations will have a
smaller increase, while longer international routes could see a higher
surcharge.
Passengers who have already booked tickets before
the new surcharge takes effect will not be affected unless they change or
modify their booking.
Air India said the situation will continue to be reviewed and ticket prices may be adjusted further depending on changes in fuel prices and operating conditions.
