New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to change the official name of the State of Kerala to Keralam, following a recommendation from the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
The move comes after the State Assembly passed a resolution seeking the name change to reflect the Malayalam pronunciation and the cultural identity of the region. The proposal was then forwarded to the Centre for consideration.
As per constitutional procedure, the next step involves introducing a Bill in Parliament to amend the relevant provisions. Once approved by both Houses and receiving Presidential assent, the change will be incorporated into the Constitution and official records.
The proposal has drawn attention as it reflects regional aspirations to align the State’s English name with its traditional and linguistic usage in Malayalam.
If completed, the change will formally recognise “Keralam” as the State’s official name in all government documentation.
