Doha, Qatar: A pioneering knee surgery has been successfully carried out at Kimshealth Qatar on a 12-year-old girl suffering from a rare condition known as discoid meniscus. The procedure was performed by Dr. Mahesh Reddy Vuruvakili, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, who specializes in shoulder and knee surgeries.
Discoid
meniscus is an uncommon disorder affecting only 1–5% of children. In this
condition, the meniscus - the cushion in the knee joint - develops in an
abnormal disc shape instead of its normal crescent form. This can lead to pain,
swelling, knee locking, and difficulty in walking, significantly affecting a
child’s mobility and daily activities.
Dr.
Reddy performed a procedure called saucerization
and repair saucerization of the meniscus, in which the abnormally shaped
meniscus was carefully reshaped to its normal size rather than being removed. Unlike
traditional methods that involve complete removal, this advanced technique
preserves the meniscus, protecting the knee joint and reducing the risk of
early arthritis in young patients.
“Preserving the meniscus allows for faster recovery and protects against early arthritis, which is especially crucial for young patients,” Dr. Reddy explained. Thanks to the innovative treatment, the child has made a smooth recovery and has already returned to her sports activities, the hospital confirmed.
